REDEEMED , THEREFORE . . .

The following is an extract from the diary of an ordinary young man who was working in a pawn shop in the 1840s.

“I do promise God that I will rise early every morning to have minutes, not less than 5, in private prayer. I will endeavour to conduct myself as a humble meek and zealous follower of Jesus, and by serious witness and warning, I will try to lead others to think of the needs of their immortal souls. I hereby vow to read no less than 4 chapters in God’s word every day. I will cultivate a spirit of self denial and will yield myself a prisoner of love to the redeemer of the world.”

That ordinary lad later became known throughout the world as General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army.
